Pose of the Month: Tree Pose

Diamond Bruns | FEB 7

This month's pose is Tree Pose. In Sanskrit--the original language of yoga--it's referred to as Vrksasana ("vrksa" = tree; "asana" =pose). This pose might be experienced during the middle portion of your yoga class sequence. This balancing and hip-opening pose gently loosens the outer hips with subtle rocking and swaying, which can offer some emotional and stress release.

Happy Black History Month!

This month's pose is Vrksasana, and I chose this pose because it's a metaphor for Black History Month. Black people have such deep roots in the history of the Americas and the Caribbean, yet they are often hidden from us. Just like the wide branches of a tree, Black culture and Black History have a far-reaching presence. It is also fitting that the balancing nature of this pose matches the balance we all hold within us. We are the perfect balance of our past lineage, the present, and future generations.

How To

Here are 5 steps to practice this pose:

  1. Begin with both feet firmly planted for a few breaths

  2. Find a point of focus for the gaze

  3. Hold the arms in a T-shape

  4. Shift the weight slowly to one leg

  5. Adjust the knee outward and place the foot on the standing ankle/calf/inner thigh

Breathe deeply for 3-5 breaths

*Bonus Options* :

Trouble balancing? Practice this pose next to a wall for steadiness

Want a challenge? Stand on a block or a thick book

Benefits

  • Strengthens the legs

  • Enhances balance and proprioception (body orientation)

  • Can improve focus and awareness

Come practice this pose with us in the next yoga class!
